Artur Akkerman came into our studios to be interviewed for our AB1825 program on sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation. It was very important to myself and the other producers that we include all of the new LGBT laws in the film so we sought out people with compelling stories to tell. Artur had just finished telling us his story of discrimination. After being passed over for multiple promotions and not understanding why, he sought advice from other manager.
It was only after two middle managers came to him to point out how he was being discriminated against for being gay did he finally understand how and why his career had been derailed. Instead of confronting the discrimination, Artur left his job.
Artur had served in supervisor roles and had helped other employees combat discrimination. He had intervened on behalf of others...how had he missed it when it was happening to him! That is a question that bothered and depressed Artur for many years to come. His experience is now helping others. In this video clip Artur describes how he is turning his own disappointment and derailment into something good for LGBT veterans.
